My Little Darin, PT DAY 60. BY JAN

Day 24 at Shepherd.

Hi everyone.  Jan here!!

Saul Raisin  stopped by my room today to visit with David and me.  What a nice surprise!!  For those of you not familiar with Saul, he was a professional bike racer who crashed in 2006.  He sustained severe brain injury and came here to Shepherd for rehab.  He had great things to say and was really an inspiration to both os us.  One important thing he said was that the hard part of recovery was still ahead of me.  It will take a LONG time to recover.  After 5 years he feels he has gotten much better,  and that I will be able to see a difference at 6 months, one year, two years, etc.  The hardest part is waiting and accepting my condition.  He's right.  I want to be fully recovered right NOW!!   I used to be so smart, and had no limitations.  Right now I have trouble solving logic problems and walking.  He suggested that I ask all of you to help by pointing out to me when my behavior seems out of character.  Now, let me just say that cursing out nurses is NOT unusual behavior for me… Merely a good way to make enemies.

Love to you all.

Jan

  2. Lol! I totally get the impatience with the medical professionals. I sometimes think that those of us who are trained in the medical field make the worst patients. I know I've been a bad one. I have a tendency to sign myself AMA every time someone's tried to hospitalize me.

We don't know each other but I've been following your journey, and it's wonderful to see a post from you.

    Be strong!

  4. I haven't been to the blog in awhile, it was getting too depressing (I can't even imagine what it would be like to be in you or your families' shoes), but to come back and see a post from you is very promising! It will be a long journey, I'm sure, but you seem like someone who will see it through! Many would have given up. My thoughts are with you for continued progress!

  6. So good to hear from you Jan. I know you have a long road ahead, but if it's any comfort, your post is probably more coherent and grammatically correct than something I would write.

  8. Jan,
I've been reading every day since the beginning and talk about you to my family like we are old friends. They will be so excited when I tell them you are doing well enough to post yourself! I am so excited for you and will continue to pray for your (and your husband's) strength every day! I have never met you, but from what your husband has told us I have no doubt in my mind you can and WILL do this.
