My Little Darlin, PT day 39, by David

Day #3 at Shepherd.  So that I do not distract Jan I will not be present at most of her therapy sessions for a while.  This is overall a good thing.  It lets her concentrate on the therapists and the therapists concentrate on her.  Patients as I said yesterday like Jan who are generally confused and agitated do not like being pushed to do what the therapists are asking them and Jan is no exception.  I can understand how  some family members may become upset at how their loved one may fight in response especially to what the physical therapists are pushing them to do.  Pushing is what they need.  I have told Jan even in her current condition (and she smiled at me)  "NO QUITTING, NO CRYING".  Right after that she said she wanted to quit.  Today I did sit in with the speech pathologists as they tried to get her to eat and answer questions.  I think Jan's stubbornness is accentuated in her current condition.  She would not eat at all for them.  They were very patient and nice with her.  She would ignore them, tell them no and tell them to leave her alone.  She would also tell them this is BS.  I was asked if I wanted to try.  I have the liberty to be more forceful and blunt.  Jan does and did respond to me being that way including the occasional smile.  I did get her to eat most of her fruit and drink fluids.  Do not get me wrong, she was still difficult with me but that is My Little Darlin.   Frequently when I ask why she is being difficult she will say "that's what I do" and will grin.  She is a stubborn one.  The physical therapist just brought her back to the room.  She says Jan gave her a run for her money including trying to hit and bite.  I saw the potential for this yesterday while watching them make her stand and am not surprised.  I saw some pretty mad faces on her during that session.  They tell me this is not unusual given her Ranchos Los Amigos level IV.  This will improve as her ability to concentrate on the task improves.  Doing all of this activity is wearing her out,  she has fallen asleep sitting in her wheelchair as I type this.  I keep telling her she is going to to have to work hard.  She tells me she chooses not to.  She refused to eat any dinner tonight, she still get adequate nutrition through her PEG tube.

Question was asked about mailing address.

Please do not forget why she is here and do what you can to keep this from happening to anyone else.  Accidents happen but this one did not have to.

I failed to mention previously that the amendment to the 3 foot law will make it a felony to severely injure or kill someone.

  1. Jan, you don't know me, and I don't know you, but through David's postings I feel I ought to know you. Hang in there. This will be the hardest thing you've ever done, but you CAN persevere. Twelve years ago I was told I was terminal, that I would be dead within 5 years. The diagnosis wasn't wrong, but the outlook was. Today I'm healthy and feel younger than I did any time since my teens.

It's going to hurt, and it's going to piss you off, but being pissed off is good, and at least the pain reminds you that you survived and that you may one day be as you once were. Channel that energy. From what I can see, you are surrounded by people who love you, and who will share what parts of your burden as they may... especially David.
